Den Danske Keramikfabrik

Ten of the independent ceramicists, who together have established a new ceramic factory - Den Danske Keramikfabrik - were at northmodern to show their own work and to demonstrate some of the techniques they use.

The factory, on the Baltic island of Bornholm, will start production in the Spring and will not just produce work from the founding group but will be able to produce ceramics for designers and companies throughout the region. It will enable companies, designers and artists to produce ceramics in larger runs or use techniques that require facilities that they may not have in their own studios.

Seeing the work of the ceramicists together in one place was fascinating. There are clearly some strong differences that mark out individual styles but there are also strong characteristics they have in common including the use, generally, of a fine and finely finished clay body for good, strong simple shapes and the use of a bold and strong range of colours.

There were bowls and mugs shown but the majority of pieces were decorative but publicity for the new factory shows the full range of techniques that will be available for the realisation of a wide range of projects and products.
